Happy New Year!

Today’s date is neat. 2011-1-1 or 11-1-1 if you’re technical, 1-1-11 in either the US or Europe, where in the US it’s understood to mean, January 1, 2011, wereas in Europe it’s understood to mean 1st January, 2011.  Personally, I like the technical designation of starting with the year because if you have mutliple items that span over several years then it’s easy to sort them completely without having to manually break them into folders for several years.  You’ll get this:

2007-10-29
2007-11-03
2008-11-04
2009-10- 31

and not

10-29-2007
10-31-2009
11-03-2007
11-04-2008.

Although, if given the choice of US vs. European, I like the European designation, as it goes from the smallest most specific designation of our place in time to the largest.  Date, Month, Year.

Yeah, that’s really how I think.

HAPPY NEW TRIP AROUND THE SUN TO ALL!!

Surfing in Santa Cruz

I think that it was back in July that we went, regardelss, I got up before the crack of dawn to meet with my colleague and we drove down to Santa Cruz for a surfing lesson.

I personally had an amazing time. It was like going church in a sense, with every one out there in the ocean sitting out about 100 yards all facing west, waiting for the next ridable wave.  It was calm, and having been out there only 20 minutes, I could see the draw and have a strong desire to get out there again.  Unfortunately, I’ve waited too long and now it’s cold outside.  I’ll be heading back in the spring.  Maybe one of my girls can come and learn with me too.

SPAM

I just don’t understand those that want to leave spam comments on this blog.  It’s not like I get 10,000 hits an hour or something.  It’s annoying and I just mark them as Spam and move on.

Today …

… will be spent in the yard pulling weeds getting the front of the house ready for our garden.  A jungle grew over the winter.  Got to get to these weeds while the ground is still wet and they’ll be relatively easy to extract from the soil.

Pup’s Status

She’s feeling much much better and is practically back to normal.  We don’t have a definitive answer as to what the problem was, but it’s a pretty good bet that her intestinal lining was bothered by a date pit that caused some extreme aggravation.  Yes, a date pit.  Now, how did she get that?

She also has an extremely out of whack routing to her intestinal tract coming right out of the stomach, as it actually heads directly north and is attached to the wall of her abdomen near the spine.  The Doc says that this could be her “normal” development, or it could be because of some trama that caused the adhesion.  There hasn’t been any external trauma that I am aware of to cause something like that.  Regardless, I’m to be on the lookout for more vomiting and any other out of normal behavior.  Believe me, after the past two weeks I’m watching her like a hawk would watch a mouse. (But I’m not going to eat her like the hawk would the mouse, eventually.)

Sick Pets

The Wrapped-Up Pup

Dogs Aren’t Supposed to Get Sick.  That’s just in the rules, and you’ve all read the rules, right?  So, what’s the deal?  Why is she sick?  Who made this happen?  There is Hell to be paid and you’re going to pay it to me.

You get better soon, pup.  We’re watching out for you!

This reminds me of a quote, the author of which I’ve been looking for for a really long time, several years in fact, since we got us this pup here to the left.  The quote, and this may not be exact because I can’t remember where it is that I read or heard about it and haven’t seen since is this “The surest evidence that God does not exist is the lifespan of a dog.”

Now, I’m not saying our pup is dying, she certainly is not and had better not be.  However, thinking about how I feel knowing that she’s sick reminded me that the time spent with our beloved canines is much too short even if we end up sharing our lives for a long time in … “dog years.”

24 Hour Fitness

You suck.  That’s all.

PissedConsumer

I cannot believe that the BBB gives them an “A”

BUT I jsut got a call from them, and the Sales Manager at my local says that she can help with this situation that I’m facing.

Move Ahead

I’m going to do something tonight that’s going to change things for me and everyone in the family and our future.  Tonight’s task itself is not going to be change things, but it’s part of a larger picture.  It’s a baby step to something.  But a step that has to be taken.  Things aren’t going to take care of themselves.

YOU need to be the mover.  The impetus.  The driver.  Drive.

Pretty relaxing day today.

Took care of some things, went to the park with the family.  Watched some TV shows.  Isn’t this what Sundays are supposed to be?

Internet Research / Fig Leaves / Beer

I’m sitting here researching how best to care for a fig tree that’s very young and originated as a young cutting from a tree that belongs to my grandfather. Here’s a good article that I just found on the matter: http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/fig.html

Just starting the research, and I decided that I needed to post about it, thereby delaying the research even further. The girls are asleep, both of them, at the same time!

You may have noticed that I’m trying to post something every day this week, but I can’t guarantee that all of them, or really any of them at all, will be very interesting. If you’re reading, just pop in with a comment and say ‘hi.’ I left this blog out to whither and dry for so long that I probably lost any regular readers that I had to begin with.

Well, that’s exactly what I don’t want to happen with the fig trees. I love figs, and I would really really love to have a mature fruiting tree here at the house.

I should also mention that while the girls are sleeping and I sit here and surf and type and read, I’m drinking a Red Oval Lager.  2.99/6-pack at Trader Joe’s .  As they say in many of the reviews here, you get what you pay for (well, more than one of them also say “It is what it is” — one of the most annoying non-statements if ever there was one, so, just ignore that and pay attention to the parts of the review that might actually help you understand what the beer is like.)  I like it, it’s 50 cents / can, and it’s much much more drinkable than the crap produced by the Miller / Anheuser Busch’s of the world.  Just don’t litter if you pick some up.
